The voice cast is led by Taron Egerton ( Kingsman), Anya Taylor-Joy ( The Witch), and Nathalie Emmanuel ( Game of Thrones), as Rian, Brea and Deet, three Gelfling heroes. And yes, we’re talking classic/old school puppets, with no CGI involved! The 10-episode fantasy adventure series takes place many years before the events of the film, and it will star an ensemble of fantastical, state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™ and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer. Via Empire Magazine, check out four brand new first-look images from the series! ![]() Just in case, let’s throw up a spoiler warning. The 1982 film The Dark Crystal is now streaming on Netflix, paving the way for the streaming service’s brand new prequel to the classic, the series “ The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” But then again, it’s been out for decades, and is available to watch right now on Netflix-so you have plenty of chances to catch it. What Happens in The Dark Crystal? If you haven’t seen the original 1982 film, recounting the plot of it may constitute a spoiler. Natalie Dormer, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Caitriona Balfe, Alicia Vikander, Eddie Izzard, and Toby Jones fill out the Gelfling cast. In addition to the names already mentioned, we can count Andy Samberg, Keegan-Michael Key, Harvey Fierstein, Awkwafina, Benedict Wong, and Mark Hamill among the Skeksis. And so, much to Lisa Henson’s surprise, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was able to recruit a ton of well-known actors. But those who did see the film were left with an indelible impression. You Keep Dropping Names-Who All Is in This? Thanks to its distinct lack of tight-panted David Bowie, 1982’s Dark Crystal may not have a legacy quite as potent as that of Labyrinth-the other trippy ’80s Henson project. But if you’re looking for the Starks, Lannisters, and Targaryens of this particular world, it’s Vapra, Stonewood, and Grottan. The bumpy-headed Drenchen, the black-haired Spriton, the seafaring Sifa, and the blue-tinged, death-obsessed Dousan all have their part to play in the resistance. The green-tinged, white-haired Grottan live underground and have a special connection to the flora and fauna of Thra. The brunette Stonewood are the warrior tribe. The blonde, ethereal Vapra pursue culture and are the top clan.Though there are seven, there are really only three you need to know to understand the series. There are seven clans-think of them like the houses on Game of Thrones-each with their own clearly defined culture and look. Gelfling? Do you mean Elfling? The Gelfling are, yes, elf-like beings, and the heroes of both this story and the original film. This, of course, is the titular Dark Crystal. A perverted version of it, now dark purple, gives the Skeksis their life and power. But at some point during the Skeksi invasion, a shard from the crystal broke off. The heart of Thra is the large and powerful Crystal of Truth. The Gelfling are the predominant race of the land, which was, at some point, invaded and taken over by the alien Skeksis. Okay, Where Are We? This story takes place in a world called Thra (shortened from the original “Mithra” to avoid confusion with the Zoroastrian Divinity) that circles three suns. The frequent joke in the Age of Resistance writers room, said Henson, was that they weren’t making The Light Crystal. ![]() Lisa Henson, who is both an executive producer on the series and head of her father’s company, told Vanity Fair that unlike the very sexy, very violent Game of Thrones, this is a fantasy show that can be watched by a family-but perhaps a family with older kids who won’t be upset by puppet-y violence, unsettling scenarios, and sad deaths. Despite the film’s puppet cast, many children of the ’80s can tell you that the movie was nightmare fodder, thanks to the terrifying Skeksis. ![]() Who Is This For? This is the big question of both the series and the original film. So here’s everything you need to know-without spoiling yourself-about the next chapter of this adventure. And despite a thorough prologue narrated by Sigourney Weaver, it’s fair to want a little extra prep before diving into this strange and complex world. The series is a chance for the Henson Company to dive deep into the cultures that created the crisis at the center of the 1982 film. But this new series is a prequel, taking place long before the time of the film’s heroic pair, Jen and Kira. Those who have seen the original 1982 Jim Henson film, The Dark Crystal, may think they know everything there is to know about the valiant Gelfling, the scheming Skeksis, and the strange planet they inhabit called Thra. When the 10 episodes of the all-puppet Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance hit Netflix on Friday, fantasy fans were confronted with a richly intricate world of complex lore that might dazzle even the tweediest Tolkien scholar.
